  • 简介
  • Thousands of commuters in London are facing chaos today, trying to get to and from work. Why? Well, the entire underground systems being shut down now for a whole day 24 hour strike call for by tube workers unions. In fact it’s the biggest walkout in a decade. Well this is what the city looks like at the moment. Thousands of people trying to seek alternative means to transport ancient to get to and from work. Extra buses have been laid on but the londoners are having to queue an enormous lines to get them. Our correspondents in the UK on the team there Laura Smith also had a long trip to walk there to get our hands. Two and half hours it took you, yeh? That’s right, after 7:30 this morning, I drove in and walked should be a 40 minutes journey, took me around two and a quarter hours. It’s crazy out there, absolute carnage is what people are saying. And that all the main arterial roads into town are completely closed and there’s no back to once you get here. We are here at Victoria station where you can see this queue behind me. It stretches right down there and then more people are coming all the time around the block to join the end of it. The staff here tell me that this queue has been here since the early out to this morning and hasn’t got any better at all. It’s a lot looking like it’s going to. The buses arriving only about once every 20 minutes now. And the staff here tell me that the bus driver’s gonna have to take a break sometime soon. So who knows what’s gonna happen to these people who are waiting behind me there. Why is this strike be called up, what’s the problem? The cause to the problem is this night service that the London underground want to introduce from September. So they are gonna have certain lines running through the nights. Now London underground say that the’ve made a fair offer they say they are going to compensate workers who working overnight. They’ll be giving a one-off bonus and they’ll also have a 2% pay rise over the course of the years. But the RMT the tube drivers’ union is a very powerful union as you know. They say that working overnight’s gonna ruin the work-life balance of tube drivers, and that is just not fair. So it’s very unclear who’s gonna back down in this scenario. So how long has this been coping generally, talking about the queues there. I mean people have been taking a day off work there, it was a nice day where you are. Think there, a bit of it, just a day off I guess is it or not. It is a nice day, yep. Well, they are looking sporting activities’ on as well. The actual course of Wimbledon, so people stay at home just to watch that. Um, yep, they have been staying at home working from home as some of them call it. They’ve also been finding alternative ways standing in these massive queues, some people have been booking over Uber, caps. But Uber have increased their prices by 3 times in the light of this tube strike, which people are saying it’s taking advantage of people’s misery essentially. And of course they’ve been tweeting about it. You know Londoners, they love good complaints but they also use humor to overcome these situations. Some people are saying they are burning calories by walking to work looking on the bright side. Some people are avoiding work all together in fact business groups say that this strike is going to cost London tens of millions of pound. When is officially over after 24 hour’s strike, will things quickly go back to normal? I think they probably will, yes. But as I said earlier it’s unclear who’s gonna back down. Obviously the RMT hopes this is gonna force London Underground back to the negotiating table, and that some kind of deal will be reached. But if it’s not, and it’s not clear it will be then we could see more of this type of misery through the summer. Ok, Laura thanks for the update, Laura Smith in London.
