Gustav Klimt was born on July 14 1862 in a small town in Austria, just southwest to Vienna. He was the second of 7 children. Like his mother, he was born with an artistic gift, but his parents, immigrants to the country, struggled to find work. Klimt grew up but very little, his family was always moving, always seeking cheaper housing. When he was 11 years old, the stock market in Vienna crashed. And the prospect of the poor seemed doomed. His younger sister passed away a year later, and his mother and elder sisters suffered from nervous disorders the rest of their lives. Klimt’s artistic talent seemed like the one saving grace for a family who had experienced so little hope. When he was 14, he and his younger brother both attended the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts on scholarships, both hoping to become drawing teachers. The training was very intensive, but he impressed his teachers from the very beginning. Soon he and his brother were taking commissions to do murals and theaters churches and museums. All the while, Klimt’s work was evolving. His style was rich and decorative, taking inspiration and motifs from the past Byzantine era and other exotic places. Klimt had reached financial security, yet when he turned 30, he saw the loss of his father and younger brother. He was deeply hurt and his art fell deeper into his own personal quest for life’s answers. Emerging from a 5 year withdrawal from the art world, he came back with a desire to shake up the establishment. Klimt thought the art world had grown stale with its conventional iconography, full of obvious and well-established meanings. His work grew into an intensively symbolic state in an attempt to achieve something universal to the human experience in a way from what had grown stale. But his new work confused the public with its vague meanings and caused controversy for their depiction of nudity. Klimt was undisturbed by these controversies as patrons still flocked to him and his fame and price allowed him to be selective. He painted many portraits of women, and although he had never married he had many romances in his life. He took care of his family his whole life, having taken on the responsibility after the death of his father and his brother. He painted landscape in the country with the locals noted him for his intensity. Klimt passed away on February 6, 1918, after suffering from a stroke.
Gustav Klimt was looked up to by many young up-and-coming artists, he sponsored the exposure of new and different artists, aided by the burgeoning culture that supported the arts.
Whoever wants to know something about me, as an artist which alone is significant, they should look attentively at my pictures and there seek to recognize what I am and what I want.
