简介
This is Dennis. And believe it or not, this is Dennis’s house. Dennis likes to get rid of things.
Dennis, I understand you had a Van Gogh once?
I did, that’s true.
And what did you do with it?
I threw it out. It cluttered my walls.
But you have no walls.
Nope, I got rid of them.
Why?
Nothing to hang on them.
And you had a cat once, right?
Yeah, you know what I did with him?
Let me guess, you got rid of him?
No, no, he ran away.
But you do like to throw things out.
Correct.
Ever worked in construction, Dennis?
Yes, I didn’t.
Anyway, what we are really talking about today is how to properly dispose of liquid waste on a construction site. So, if you worked in construction, what would you do with cement waste?
Get rid of it.
Drywall mud?
Get rid of it.
Leftover solvents?
Ooh, that I’ll keep.
Oh, you have to be kidding me.
Of course I am.
Have a seat.
The point here is, we’ve all heard stories about what goes on at construction sites. Well, those were the old days and times have changed. And now we have to get rid of yesterday’s bad habits. What does that mean to you? Well, if you don’t dispose of waste right, you could be fined. Or worse, lose work because of the project being delayed by an inspector.
Here are a few ways to dispose of waste properly. Let’s start with the wash water. Do not use the sanitary sewer to drain groundwater or water from the basements. And cap your connections. They are not supposed to be hooked up until someone’s actually living in the house. What about cleaning construction vehicles? Well, you’ve got 2 choices. Either take them somewhere else, or set up a designated wash area. Want to change your oil or antifreeze on-site? No, you shouldn’t do that. So don’t even think about it. Now here are some ways to prevent and contain spills. First, don’t wash spilled materials into catch basins or storm drains. Second, make sure your drains have filters to keep sediment out. Third, sweep paved surfaces instead of spraying them with water. Finally, storm sewers are only for snow melt and rainwater. So that’s no dirt, oil, paints, antifreeze, chemicals, and no spilled material. Just remember, it’s your job to control construction runoff. Every construction site needs a plan for sediment and erosion control before any work begins. Plus, there are federal, provincial and municipal laws you need to follow. So there you have it. Got questions? Just ask. Don’t be like Dennis. Always put construction waste in the right place. You will be saving our sewers and protecting our environment too.
